A baby's hands go through more change in twelve months than at any later point in their life. It happens in a rough order, and once you know the order a lot of otherwise baffling behaviour makes sense — why a four-month-old bats at a toy instead of taking it, why a nine-month-old suddenly wants the crumb on the floor more than anything you own.

None of what follows is a schedule. Ranges in child development are wide, and the American Academy of Pediatrics is explicit that milestones describe what most children do by a given age, not what yours should be doing. If something worries you, that is a conversation for a paediatrician, not a blog.

Months one to three: hands are not yet tools

Newborns hold their hands closed most of the time. There is a grasp reflex — press a finger into the palm and it closes — but it is a reflex, not a decision, and it fades over the first couple of months.

What changes first is not the hand but the eyes. Babies start tracking movement, then start bringing their own hands into view and watching them. The hands become interesting objects before they become useful ones.

At this stage almost nothing you offer will be gripped on purpose. Contrast, movement and faces are what hold attention.

Months three to five: reaching, badly

Somewhere around four months a baby will swipe at something they can see. The first attempts overshoot, undershoot, and land with the whole arm rather than the hand. This is not clumsiness so much as a control problem being solved in public: the arm is being calibrated against the eyes.

Then the hand starts to open before contact rather than after it, which is the real breakthrough. Anticipating the shape of a thing before you touch it is a different skill from closing on it once you have.

Two practical consequences. First, anything within reach is now within reach, which is earlier than most people prepare for. Second, everything acquired goes in the mouth, because the mouth is still the better sensor. Mouthing is not a phase to discourage; it is how a baby of this age finds out what something is.

Months five to seven: transferring, and the raking grasp

Two things arrive close together.

The first is passing an object from one hand to the other. It looks trivial. It is not — it means both hands are being coordinated as a pair, and it is the foundation of everything two-handed that comes later.

The second is the raking grasp: dragging a small object toward themselves with curled fingers and scooping it into the palm. It is inefficient and it works. This is the point at which small objects on the floor become a genuine hazard rather than a theoretical one.

Babies at this stage also start to bang, shake and drop things deliberately. Banging is exploratory. A thing that makes a different sound on wood than on a rug is providing information.

Months eight to twelve: the pincer grasp

The change most parents notice is the pincer grasp — thumb and index finger opposed, picking up something small with precision. It usually shows up somewhere around nine or ten months, first as a crude thumb-against-side-of- finger pinch, later as a fingertip one.

It is a genuinely large motor achievement and it changes what a baby is capable of getting into. Anything the size of a raisin is now retrievable.

Alongside it comes voluntary release, which is harder than grasping and arrives later. Before release develops, a baby who has your keys cannot give them back even if they want to. After it develops, you get the dropping game: object over the side of the high chair, watch it fall, wait for it to be returned, repeat. This is not provocation. Watching a thing fall the same way every time is early physics.

Late in the first year most babies start putting objects into containers as well as taking them out. In and out is a surprisingly late skill and it absorbs children for long stretches once it lands.

A note on handedness

Parents often try to read a preferred hand in the first year. It is too early. A dominant hand usually settles somewhere between two and four, and before that most children switch depending on position, fatigue and what is nearest. Alternating is normal. A strong, fixed preference before the first birthday is one of the few hand-related things worth mentioning to a doctor, because it can mean the other side is being avoided rather than the preferred side chosen.

Where hands actually get built

Almost none of this development happens because of a toy. It happens because of position.

Time spent on the front, awake and supervised, does more for hand control than anything you can buy: it loads the shoulders and the forearms, and stable shoulders are what allow a hand to be aimed. A baby who is mostly upright in seats and carriers gets less of that loading. This is why paediatric guidance keeps returning to floor time, and it is a free intervention.

The same is true of sitting. Once a baby can sit unsupported, both hands come free at once, and two-handed play — holding with one, exploring with the other — opens up. The milestone is a postural one that happens to unlock a manual one.

What this means for what you put in front of them

Not much, honestly, and that is the useful part. For most of the first year the things that hold attention are the ones that respond simply and survive being chewed: a cloth, a wooden ring, a container and something to put in it, a set of nesting cups.

Two constraints worth holding to regardless of what you buy. Anything a baby can reach should be too large to fit in the mouth — the standard test is whether it passes through a toilet-roll tube. And the age marking on a toy box is a safety label about small parts, not a difficulty rating, so a 3+ label on something aimed at babies is a reason to look closer, not a compliment about how advanced your child is.

The rest is mostly floor time. Hands develop by being used against real objects, and there is no toy that does that better than a low shelf, a hard floor and something interesting just out of reach.
